Thanks to the good folks at Bitdefender, you can now add a great layer of protection to your Windows computer which will help to combat the dreaded “Ransonware” viruses.
A computer which becomes infected with this type of virus basically has all of it’s files “locked” with a “key” which only the offender can give you. It comes at a cost of generally a few hundred dollars. There is NO WAY to unlock your files without that key– & there is a time limit by which you must pay your ransom. This infection spreads to ANY connected device (external hard drives, USB flash drives, SD cards in a card reader) –> as well as ANY cloud service you use if you are logged in at that moment. It’s a VERY nasty virus.
“Bitdefender anti-malware researchers have released a new vaccine tool which can protect against known and possible future versions of the CTB-Locker, Locky and TeslaCrypt crypto ransomware families by exploiting flaws in their spreading methods.
“The new tool is an outgrowth of the Cryptowall vaccine program, in a way.” Chief Security Strategist Catalin Cosoi explained. “We had been looking at ways to prevent this ransomware from encrypting files even on computers that were not protected by Bitdefender antivirus and we realized we could extend the idea.”
The new tool is available for download here.
